Getting Started Guide
How to Use the AI Coop Assistant Chat
The AI Coop Assistant is the heart of GoodCoop — a single chat window that runs your whole flock. New to AI? Don't worry. The whole point of the chat is that you talk to it like a friend who happens to know a lot about chickens. This guide shows you exactly what the chat can do and how to get the most out of it from day one.
What the chat can do for you
The Coop Assistant chat isn't just a Q&A bot. It's an action layer for your entire coop — it can record data, answer questions, and save advice for later, all in the same conversation.
Say "I collected 6 eggs today" and it records the collection in your egg tracker — no forms, no taps.
Say "Add a new bird named Henrietta, breed Buff Orpington" to add a hen to your flock instantly.
Say "Log $24.99 for a 50lb bag of layer feed" and it goes straight into your coop budget.
Health, behavior, predators, breeds, seasons, coop design — ask in plain English and get an expert answer.
The chat toolbar — at a glance

Try these starter prompts
Not sure what to type first? Copy any of these into the chat and see what comes back.
How to ask great questions
The single biggest tip for getting useful AI answers: add context. The more the chat knows about your flock, the more specific the advice.
Okay question
"Why aren't my chickens laying?"
Great question
"I have 4 Buff Orpingtons and 2 Rhode Island Reds, all about 18 months old, in central Ohio. They were laying 5 eggs a day and dropped to 1 over the past week. It just turned cold. What should I check?"
Useful context includes: number and breed of birds, their age, your climate or state, what changed recently, and what you've already tried. Don't worry about grammar or "AI prompts" — just describe the situation the way you would to a friend.
A simple 4-step start
- 1. Open the chat. Sign in and open the AI Coop Assistant from the home page or the Coop Lab.
- 2. Introduce your flock. In your first message, tell it your breeds, how many birds, ages, and roughly where you live. The chat keeps that context throughout the conversation.
- 3. Try one action and one question. Log today's eggs ("I collected 4 eggs today") and ask something you actually wonder about. You'll see both sides of what the chat can do.
- 4. Save what's useful. When a reply is helpful, hit "Add to To Do" or "Save" so you can find it again from your saved page.
A note on safety
The Coop Assistant is a great first stop and a fantastic teacher, but it's not a substitute for a veterinarian. For emergencies, suspected contagious disease, or anything that doesn't feel right, call an avian vet or your state poultry extension office.
Open the chat and try it
The fastest way to learn the Coop Assistant is to send your first message. Tell it about your flock — it takes less than a minute.
